| | MEET SONJA | | The first thing that strikes you about local businesswoman, Sonja Nielsen, is her voice. It’s a voice that puts you instantly at ease. It’s a distinctive voice; her Danish heritage is immediately noticeable from her accent. When Sonja speaks, you quickly get a sense that she knows what she’s talking about. The Voice of Experience
Behind that voice are years of experience, knowledge, hard work and education. Born in Denmark, Sonja moved to Canada with her late husband, Arne, who she met when she was 15. A few years later, they were two young adults searching for a better life, working hard to get by while raising their two daughters and son.
The House That Nielsen Built
The Nielsen’s rise was a classic rags to riches story. Arne became a respected homebuilder and Sonja found her calling in real estate, where she quickly excelled. She immersed herself in the field and became a respected local business leader. She was the Director for the Chamber of Commerce in Kingston. Sonja also served on the Board of Governors for a Kingston hospital and in 1967 represented Canada at an international conference on real estate (FIABCI) held in her native country - Copenhagen, Denmark. Always a mover and a shaker, Sonja was on the “ground floor” of the first high rise condos built in the area.
Passing on Her Heritage
For Sonja, all the accolades and awards and honors she’s achieved in her life are important, but not as important as family. For her, nothing is as enriching as spending a weekend having her four grandchildren over for a “sleepover.” At a typical get-together, she and her grandkids select a menu, Sonja teaches them how to cook and they enjoy a dinner with regal place settings, followed by a movie. Sonja enjoys teaching them the Danish language and customs.
